Another thing you can do is mandolin style tremolo picking.
What we want to do is put our pick close to edge of the bridge, and move back & forth rapidly, using as little motion as possible so we can sustain it for a long time.
This takes practice to build up muscle, but the key is that we must be efficient with our motion.
We don’t want to put the pick too low on the string.
By barely touching it on the edge of the pick, we can get a consistent sound without requiring tons of tension & back & forth motion.
